Jon Duffy Talks Social Media at Chamber’s Leaders Lunch

If you learn one thing about social media… it’s important to have a strategy.

Just registering with social media outlets, creating general profiles and leaving them there is not enough. To make the social networking work for you, you need to spread awareness about what you do in an effective, engaging and consistent way.

That was the advice of Jon Duffy, president of Duffy & Shanley, Inc. at Wednesday’s Meet the Leaders Lunch held at Café Nuovo.

As part of his presentation, Jon focused on giving advice and tips on using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and how to integrate these tools into the marketing and recruiting efforts of individually companies. During the candid discussion, which was driven by audience questions, Jon shared some of the best practices employed by his company and its clients.

A few key points:

  • Marketing through social networks isn’t as much about selling your product, as it is about engaging your audience. You need to create and maintain a genuine dialogue.
  • Social recruiting is an effective way to utilize social networks to find the best candidate for any open positions at your company. He cited LinkedIn as great resource for finding talent.
  • Social media can certainly be an effective way to help expand your company’s reach and marketing efforts, but there are plenty of issues surrounding privacy and legalities that you should always be aware of.
  • Effective marketing is a combination of traditional advertising and social media. Companies that successful utilize both will experience the greatest market saturation.

The Leaders Lunch is the Chamber’s newest program, created at the urging of the members who are interested in hearing and learning from some of Rhode Island’s top CEOs.

The event is designed to be an intimate forum where chosen leaders share their expertise, experience, and lessons in business with members. The program is focused on providing an opportunity for attendees to enhance their leadership skills, network and learn by interacting with some of Rhode Island’s top CEOs.
