RIPTA Forced to Re-route Buses Due to Snow

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority announced Wednesday that due to heavily accumulated snow from past snowstorms, four routes will be on detour starting today until further notice. Massive mounds of snow have piled up, the authority said in a news release, narrowing streets and making it “extremely difficult for RIPTA buses to travel safely through.”

The following routes are on detour until further notice:

Route 6 (Prairie Avenue): Outbound and Inbound trips will travel via Prairie Avenue. Pearl Street, Gay Street, Blackstone Street, Staniford Street, Pilgrim Street, Hilton Street and Public Street will not be served during the detour.

Service to the main entrances of CCRI and Women & Infants Hospital has been suspended.

Route 42 (Hope Street): Inbound: Trips into Providence will travel via Hope Street, right onto Angell Street, left onto Thayer Street and then resume regular route.

Route 64 (Newport/URI): At the URI Bay Campus, buses will only serve the Upper Parking Lot.

Route 66 (URI/Galilee): All Outbound and Inbound trips will travel via Route 138, right onto Upper College Road, left onto the URI Campus, right onto Lower College Road and then to the URI Ram Union. RIPTA has suspended service on Lower College Rd between Campus and Rte #138.

RIPTA also announced that throughout the storm that has just begun, passengers should anticipate delays on all routes, and that five routes would have detours:

Route 14 (West Bay): Buses will not pull into the Park N’ Ride lot at Routes 1A and 138. Passengers will be picked up on the street.

Route 60 (Providence/Newport): All service to Bay View Apartments has been suspended.

Route 63 (Broadway/Middletown Shopping): Outbound: Trips leaving the Gateway Center will travel the regular route to Hillside and Beacon Streets, right onto Beacon Street, left onto West Main Road, left onto Maple Street and then resume regular route.

Inbound: Trips to the Gateway Center will travel the regular route to Maple Street, right onto Maple Street, right onto West Main Road, left onto Beacon Street to Hillside and Beacon Streets and then resume the regular route.

Route 64 (Newport/URI): Buses will not serve the CCRI Campus. Buses will not loop the URI Bay Campus and will turn around at the Visitors’ Center.

Route 67 (Bellevue/Salve Regina): All inbound and outbound trips WILL NOT travel on Touro Street and will travel via America’s Cup and Memorial Boulevard.

RIPTA customers should call (401) 781-9400 or visit RIPTA’s website, www.ripta.com, for updated service status updates and travel advisories. Customers are advised to use extra caution at bus stops, as conditions may be icy and slippery.
