Storm Update: Business Stagger Release/Drivers Use Caution

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is urging motorists to drive with extreme caution during the evening commute, as travel conditions will be difficult due to localized flooding and a predicted flash freeze of roadways as temperatures drop tonight.

We have been asked by the Rhode Island state police to urge local businesses to close early, but stagger their closing hours to avoid a traffic jam.

DOT officials have reported that they have already begun spreading salt and sand in preparation for the rush hour commute. Officials caution that even though road surfaces may appear wet, they may be freezing or frozen.

Reduce your speed, plan additional time for your trip, and avoid any unnecessary travel during icing conditions. They also cautioned that some highway ramps in Providence already have water collected at the bottom and may be closed.

RI EMA officials are once again asking us to remind the business community about the importance of clearing your drains and rooftops. Flat roofs are particularly vulnerable to accumulating snow, ice and moisture.
