195 Commission Bill Signing Ceremony: New energy and new focus

GPCC President Laurie White joined Governor Lincoln Chafee, Speaker Gordon Fox, Senate President Teresa Paiva- Weed, Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio, Representative John Carnevale, Providence Mayor Angel  Tavares and Dr. Mark Schlissel, Provost of Brown University, in celebrating the collaborative, inclusive creation of the 195 Development Commission.  This landmark bill, authorizing the creation of a regulatory body which will oversee the development of lands newly available through the repositioning of the 195 Interstate, marks a major step forward in spurring economic development in Rhode Island.

“This endeavor is the first step toward attracting new jobs in the areas of research, technology and the life sciences to the Knowledge District in Providence,” said Laurie. “The fast track development targeted for this area  would not be possible without the cooperation of the nonprofit investors (Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College. Women & Infants and Lifespan), who identified and prioritized their expansion plans in concert with one another.”

“The Chamber looks forward to working with members of the 195 Development Commission,” Laurie added, “in an effort to keep the unprecedented momentum building and to help facilitate participation in the forthcoming discussions.”
