Electric Boat’s Quonset Point Facility Expanding

GPCC attended the annual Electric Boat Economic Forecast presented by John Casey, President of Electric Boat. In attendance were Senators Reed and Whitehouse, Congressmen Langevin and Cicilline, Governor Chafee, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts as well as members of the Rhode Island General Assembly.

Electric Boat ‘s 2012 economic forecast is extremely positive due to the Virginia Class build-out and the Ohio replacement submarine programs. Casey described their employment projections as “fantastic,” expecting to hire an additional 250 workers this year, and by the end of 2014,  create  500 more positions at the Quonset Point facility. Over the past 2 years alone, EB has increased it’s ranks at Quonset Point by hiring an additional  500 employees. Casey indicated that despite the good news, some challenges continue, including congressional budget pressures, regulatory burdens and state projected budget deficits. He cited combined reporting as a serious concern that would adversely impact Electric Boat. He concluded his remarks by stating that “Electric Boat will continue to be a strong corporate citizen and a key contributor to the economic vitality of the region.”

The Economic Forecast presentation followed a dedication ceremony for EB,  celebrating the construction of a new building at Quonset Point to include a 146,000 square-foot production facility.
